Herndon Friends Meeting has come to unity in the decision to request Fairfax County Police Department to end their contract with Flock Safety, or other automated license plate reader vendors.
Flock cameras uniquely profile every passing vehicle to create a history of every cars' movements, which can be accessed by law enforcement without a warrant. This has resulted in widespread abuse.
Flock cameras have been used to track our immigrant neighbors, No Kings protesters, ex-girlfriends of police officers, a Texas woman getting an abortion, and other innocent people who were victims of false positives from Flock cameras.
FCPD says it does not use Flock cameras for immigration cases. However, audit logs show that Flock cameras in Fairfax County have been used for federal immigration purposes. This has happened because FCPD shares its Flock data with other departments.
A Virginia law regulated Flock cameras, but a recent report revealed that police departments throughout the state broke this law. Additionally, Virginia police have issued thousands of searches with vague, one-word justifications such as “suspect,” “suspicious,” or even “123.”
